Seborrheic Eczema

Seborrheic eczema is a skin condition that affects the scalp, face and torso. It makes the sufferer’s skin in these areas inflamed, scaly and itchy.

The specific causes of seborrheic eczema are still unknown but genetics and environmental factors have been shown to be involved in its development.

Seborrheic eczema signs and symptoms

The most obvious signs are patches of red, flaky patches on areas of the skin that are rich with sebaceous glands.

For infants, symptoms can often look like cradle cap on the scalp. Adult sufferers have similar scalp scaling that is similar to dandruff.

In almost all cases, seborrheic eczema is itchy and becomes easily irritated and sore. The symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis can last from few weeks to years and many patients experience periods of inflammation.

Lifestyle tips

As with most types of eczema, it’s extremely important to keep the skin soft and supple to stop it drying out.

Sufferers are recommended to bathe daily without fragrant bubble bath gels as these can irritate the condition. After washing, thoroughly moisturise with a natural product, free from chemicals that might cause flare ups, to keep the skin healthy and lubricated.

It’s also advised to keep your home at a moderate temperature and avoid stressful situations as these can cause eczema rashes to appear on other parts of the body.

Diet tips

Some studies have shown that certain diets can increase the amount of seborrheic eczema flare ups sufferers have. If yours are happening often, it could help to change what you eat and drink.

Introduce omega 3 rich foods, such as mackerel or salmon, into your daily diet as these fatty acids help to reduce inflammation.

Fresh vegetables and fruit are also packed with vitamins A and D which help to rebuild healthy skin cells and protect the skin from scarring.
