BENEFITS
This oil is cold pressed from the fruit of the olive tree Olea europaea.  Akoma’s organic extra virgin olive oil comes from Palestine where, for 5,000 years, it has been an important part of the economy and culture.  The olive trees are passed through generations of the same family.  This olive oil is rich and nourishing, ethically sourced, fairly traded and can be used in food or skincare.

Olive oil is well known for its health benefits in the diet.  It is packed with antioxidants – including vitamins A and E, polyphenols and the rare antioxidant hydroxytyrosol – which contribute to its following benefits: boosting metabolism, lowering blood cholesterol, building healthy cell walls, aiding digestion and even anti-carcinogenic qualities.  The oil also contains vitamins B1, B2, B6, C, proteins and minerals.  To benefit from the oil’s maximum potential, it is best used unheated, such as drizzled over food and used in salad dressings.

As the skin is highly absorbant, all the above benefits can be taken into the body when used topically in skincare – always ensure that the highest grade extra virgin olive oil.  Mixed with sea-salt and rubbed over the body, the oil removes dead skin cells, making an effective and economic exfoliator.  The oil is popular in home-made facial masks, as a facial cleanser and make-up remover, and as an effective shaving oil, replacing the need for shaving cream.  Mixed with a drop or two of exquisite essential oil, it also makes a top-quality, natural after-shave balm.

Although it might seem counterintuitive, because we may have been brought up to think of oil as greasy and dirt-trapping, quality vegetable oil is actually an excellent cleanser and has been used since ancient times in the ‘oil cleansing method’.  Olive oil can be mixed with another oil, such as organic castor oil in a ratio of around 80% olive to 20% castor, for a deeply cleansing and balancing treatment.

Rather than strip out the body’s natural oils with commercial cleansers, the oil cleansing method removes dead cells, debris and blocked pores, to gently and deeply cleanse and moisturize the skin.  It is ideal for both dry and oily skin conditions, including acne.  You may wish to adjust the oil blend to suit your particular preferences.

Common uses:  Soaps, skincare, moisturisers, skin cleansers, bath oil, body oil, hair care, shaving oil, nail and cuticle care; treatment/removal of ear wax build-up.
