Spearmint Essential Oil Organic
Mentha Spicata Herb Oil
BOTANICAL NAME
Mentha Spicata Herb Oil.
EXTRACTION METHOD
Steam distillation.
SUGGESTED USE & BENEFITS
Spearmint is native to the Mediterranean and Asia but is now naturalised in many parts of Africa and North and South America. The oil is obtained from the flowering tops and leaves of the plant.
Although spearmint and peppermint oil are both from the mint family, spearmint is a distinct species with a different chemical composition. It has an aroma similar to peppermint and, to a large extent, constituents and qualities in common – such as cooling, decongestant, and carminative. The main difference is that it has minimal menthol and menthone in comparison to peppermint. It is a little gentler and therefore may be chosen in preference to peppermint oil when treating children.
Benefits and Common Uses
The oil is an effective antioxidant and renowned for soothing digestive upsets. Used in a burner, bath, steam inhalation, or blended massage oil, it can be used to treat mental fatigue, vomiting, headaches, migraines, stress, flatulence, and spasms of the digestive tract. It also has ‘clearing’ and decongestant properties, ideal for clearing sinusitis and catarrh.
Used in a lotion, the oil has a cooling, therapeutic effect on the skin and can relieve itching.
Spearmint oil can be effective for the digestive system, for the respiratory tract, for a tired mind, and for skin problems.
