Mature Skin

Mature skin is a category of skin type which begins when your skin starts to lose its elasticity.

Typically this happens when you reach the age of 65, but if your skin has considerable sun damage or suffers from other conditions, it may be seen as mature earlier.

Mature skin signs and symptoms

Changes to your skin are normal as you age. Mature skin may become rough and wrinkled, it may also change colour and dark spots might form.

One of the biggest changes you might notice is the inelasticity.

Lifestyle tips

One of the leading causes of damaged skin is from the sun. UV rays penetrate the outer surface of the skin and damages its supporting structure. You should wear sunscreen of 15 SPF every day, even in cloudy or overcast weather. This blocks the sun’s harmful rays and prevents wrinkles and sunspots on the skin.

Smoking is another reason many people find their skin ageing faster. When you smoke, the tobacco in cigarettes dries out the skin, giving it a rough texture and grey colouration. The repetitive movement that is needed to smoke means fine lines quickly start to form around the mouth and on the forehead.

It’s generally recommended not to smoke to protect your general health and your skin.

Diet tips

Mature skin requires much more hydration than younger skin as it loses elasticity. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water throughout the day, the recommended daily amount is between eight to ten 200ml glasses.

As mature skin easily dries out, it’s important to eat a diet rich in monounsaturated fats. These fats help your skin lock in moisture and protects its outer layer from environmental damage. Foods like avocados and oily fish are rich in monounsaturated fats so regularly include them in your meals.

Also include vitamins C and E daily as these antioxidants help your skin produce collagen and repair skin cells. Dark leafy vegetables such as kale and broccoli have a high concentration of these vitamins.

Akoma recommends

Mature skin needs a lot of hydration to keep it’s elasticity and certain vitamins to help maintain the collagen levels that keeps it healthy.

Akoma Shea Butter has a naturally high count of principal fatty acids that increases the levels of vitamin A and E found in the butter.

These vitamins keep your skin protected and supple, making it perfect for daily treatment of mature skin.

The high antioxidant count in shea butter also helps your skin’s natural repair systems so if new lines appear, your skin will work quickly to help them fade.

Alternatively, use Akoma Coconut Butter as light, daily moisturiser. It is rich in antioxidants, minerals, protein, vitamin E and fiber which all work together to calm and smooth deep set wrinkles.

The butter is 100% virgin and organic, and contains no GMO ingredients, making it an ideal moisturiser for those who suffer with generally sensitive skin.
